About GasNet
GasNet is the largest gas distribution network operator in the Czech Republic and a key part of the country's critical infrastructure. The company ensures the safe and reliable delivery of natural gas to more than 2.3 million customers through a network of approximately 65,000 kilometres of pipelines, covering the majority of the country outside Prague. GasNet serves households, businesses, and public institutions, and plays a central role in the Czech energy ecosystem. Its scale and importance make operational reliability and security a top priority.
Initial situation and challenges
GasNet's AWS environment originated from a lift-and-shift migration carried out by a previous supplier, who transitioned on-premises systems to the cloud. However, the platform was not yet fully optimised to take advantage of AWS-native capabilities and had primarily been maintained rather than actively developed. As the infrastructure evolved, key operational areas such as patching, monitoring, and backup management lacked structure and consistency. This led to increasing pressure on security, cost control, and long-term scalability, while also placing additional demands on internal teams
Main challenges:
- Lift-and-shift architecture from initial migration: the environment was not yet fully optimised for AWS-native services, limiting scalability and efficiency.
- Inconsistent patching: irregular updates increased security exposure and risk of outdated systems.
- Limited monitoring maturity: the existing setup lacked a consistent, unified approach to monitoring, reducing visibility across the environment.
- Backup and tooling gaps: reliance on legacy or custom solutions instead of scalable AWS-native services.
- Rising cost pressure: inefficiencies and licensing overhead from older solutions.
Solution
Trustsoft took over AWS operations and introduced a professional, structured, cloud-native approach covering proactive monitoring, patching and security. The infrastructure was transitioned from manual ClickOps management to fully codified Infrastructure as Code with CI/CD pipelines, and additional hardening measures were implemented with a stronger focus on resilience and security. A new operational model based on AWS Systems Manager, AWS Backup, and existing Amazon S3 usage replaced legacy tooling and improved transparency. Access was simplified through Single Sign-On integration with Active Directory, making user management more efficient. Trustsoft also migrated shared file workloads from NetApp ONTAP to Amazon FSx, a managed service supporting both Windows and Linux environments at significantly lower cost. In parallel, a modern data intelligence platform was built using Amazon S3, AWS Glue, Amazon Redshift, and MWAA with Apache Airflow for ETL orchestration, while internal teams were upskilled through workshops.
Key elements of the solution:
- 24/7 AWS operations: GasNet now has fully managed support with proactive monitoring and incident handling as a service.
- AWS-native operations stack: Systems Manager, AWS Backup, and S3 replaced legacy tools where it was appropriate.
- Structured patch management: regular and controlled updates improving security and compliance.
- Amazon FSx implementation: modern shared file system for Windows and Linux workloads with lower cost.
- SSO via Active Directory: simplified and secure access management across AWS.
Data intelligence platform: built on S3, Redshift, Glue, and MWAA for scalable data processing.
Benefits
GasNet now operates on a stable, secure, and cost-optimised AWS foundation with fully managed operational processes. The introduction of cloud-native services and managed infrastructure reduced complexity and improved financial efficiency. The environment is now more secured, resilient, and AI-ready, providing a solid foundation for upcoming data and IoT initiatives. Trustsoft also continuously covers operations, compliance, passive security controls, and ongoing FinOps optimisation, enabling GasNet’s internal DevOps team to focus on delivering new capabilities and innovation.
Benefits in practice:
- ~30% cost reduction on shared storages through FinOps-driven analysis and replacing legacy shared storage (NetApp ONTAP) with Amazon FSx.
- 24/7 support and incident management, ensuring 99.5%+ SLA-backed production availability.
- Unified monitoring with full visibility into system health, enabling faster incident detection and response.
- More secured, more resilient, and AI-ready infrastructure through cloud-native services, ready for future data and IoT initiatives.
- Simplified user access via Single Sign-On with Active Directory.
- Internal DevOps teams can pioritize development instead of routine operations.
“Ensuring smooth and reliable operations is mission-critical for European gas supply, and we’re proud to play a role in such an important responsibility. It’s rewarding to contribute to infrastructure that people and businesses across Europe depend on every day.”
