ShipMonk: From a Small Startup to a Billion-Dollar Business

About the Company
ShipMonk is a US-based third-party logistics (3PL) provider founded in 2014 and headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It handles warehousing, inventory management and order fulfillment for e-commerce and direct-to-consumer brands, operating multiple fulfillment centers across the US and abroad. ShipMonk continues to scale its technology and infrastructure to support its fast-growing global customer base.

Challenge
As one of the fastest-growing startups in logistics, ShipMonk ran 3 production servers and 4 development servers across Vultr and Digital Ocean. The setup limited how far the business could grow and made routine updates risky.
- Did not allow scaling; performance could only be increased by adding an instance
- Updates were complicated and required short application downtime
- No separate data centers to easily switch to

Solution
Migration began with breaking the application into microservices. In AWS, Trustsoft built the entire environment in Terraform, adopted Kubernetes for orchestration, and prepared a CI/CD pipeline for continuous deployment.
- Application refactored into microservices
- Infrastructure built in Terraform
- Kubernetes for container orchestration
- CI/CD pipeline for continuous deployment

Benefits
ShipMonk now runs across 3 separate data centers, scales automatically as demand changes, and rolls out updates in the background without interrupting service. The CI/CD pipeline supports unlimited deployment of new versions, alongside a reduction in cost.
- Outage resistance across 3 separate data centers
- Automatic scaling up or down as needed
- Background updates with no downtime
- Unlimited deployment of new versions via CI/CD
- Cost reduction
